Franklin Park Zoo
I have always considered the Franklin Park Zoo as a little hidden gem in Boston.
Perhaps I am just a wee bit sentimental because I actually went into labor as I was reporting on a story at the Zoo. A sad, sad giraffe named Beau had a disease wasting disease I think it was and the Zoo thought he might perk up with the addition of a mate Jana. I trotted off to the Zoo to take a look at Beau and his new mate and at some point my water broke. It wasn’t as dramatic as you see at the movies, but I left the Zoo to head to Brigham and Women’s and although they sent me home I was back the next morning at 5am to deliver my daughter. So Franklin Park and me we have a connection.
In any event, I have always thought the Franklin Park Zoo deserves more foot traffic than it gets. It may not have the marquee animals of some other zoos but it is a delightful place to spend the day with your kids.

Here are some upcoming events at the Zoo (yes, it is still open in the winter).

Sing-a-Longs with Su Eaton!
Every Saturday in January and March, 11:00 a.m. – Noon
Franklin Park Zoo

Escape the winter chill and bring your little ones down to the always-balmy Tropical Forest for family entertainment provided by our professional children’s entertainer during our Saturday Sing-a-Longs! Wildly popular children’s entertainer, Su Eaton, will perform every Saturday in January and March. These events will be held in the Hippo Theater at Franklin Park Zoo and are free with general Zoo admission. Saturday Sing-a-Longs will be held January 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 and March 7, 14, 21 and 28.

Go Ape during School Vacation Week!
February 16 – 20, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Franklin Park Zoo

Set off on a tropical excursion during February school vacation week and bring your family to Franklin Park Zoo for an ape-themed getaway! Learn about these incredible animals by visiting our gorilla troop at the Tropical Forest. Children of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of creative and educational ape-related activities.

And if you go and you happen to see Beau - give him my best.
